Mosquers & Rifelion Open Submissions for Muslim Screenplays

Rifelion is partnering with The Mosquers Film Festival on an exciting new initiative for Muslim filmmakers. Teams composed of Muslim writers and directors are encouraged to pitch their short film concepts that feature Muslim characters. Screenplay pitches may be for a film of any genre, but must fit the theme "stories in the workplace." Selected finalists will go on to submit a short film script and pitch deck which they will present live at The Mosquers Film Festival in Edmonton, Alberta on Oct. 15, 2023. The top team will win $1,000 USD and the chance to have their film produced by Rifelion Media.

"The Mosquers Film Festival is the place to be for Muslim artists and creatives," said Rifelion founder and CEO Asad Butt. "We can't wait to see the exceptional storytelling that emerges from this community and showcase it [to] the world."

Asif Quraishi, production director of The Mosquers Film Festival, sees this pitch competition as an opportunity for Muslim artists. "In March 2022, the Mosquers expanded to a multi-day festival by inviting Muslim artists from all over the world to our industry event 'Opening Credits,'" said Quaraishi. "The creative energy was palpable and everyone went away with a burning desire to make something. [Holding] this competition as a part of our festival allows us to channel that energy and provide a focused avenue for Muslim creatives, which Rifelion is already doing." 

Teams may submit a one-page synopsis of their film idea using the application form by Sept. 22, 2023. Two information sessions will be held prior to the deadline. To learn more, visit the landing page for the pitch competition at the link below.
