A comic from November 2023 showcases the brutal reality of a Palestinian woman who was trapped under Gazan rubble. Reem Ahmed, in Khan Younis, was trapped under rubble in Gaza for 12 hours after her building collapsed due to Israeli strikes on Oct. 10. Unable to find her, Ahmed’s family believed she was dead. She was later rescued and has gone on to tell her story.

Reem Ahmed’s sister Alaa Zaher Ahmed gave her own account of the event to Newsweek, which can be read here.

The comic, which was featured in The Washington Post, was based on Ahmed’s written account and interviews and edited for clarity.

Ahmed’s story was illustrated by Rama Duwaji, a Syrian illustrator and animator based in New York. Editing was done by Reem Akkad and Hannah Good. Design editing was done by Christine Ashack and Joseph Moore. Copy editing by Brian Cleveland.
