“The Killer” Featuring Saïd Taghmaouito Expected To Restart Multi-Country Production Soon
The highly anticipated remake of John Woo's 1989 action flick will star Taghmaouito in a role that has yet to be announced.

Peacock is remaking John Woo's iconic film “The Killer,” with Woo himself returning as the director. The film is a highly anticipated English language adaptation of Woo’s 1989 Hong Kong film of the same name. “The Killer” was almost finished filming in May of this year when the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike halted production. According to producer Charles Roven, the production has somewhere between 10 and 18 days left of filming before completion.

The original film followed professional hitman Ah Jong (Chow Yun-Fat), who accidentally blinds a beautiful young singer named Jennie (Sally Yeh) during a shootout on one of his assignments. Overwhelmed by guilt, Ah Jong befriends Jennie and seeks to pay for her cornea transplant to restore her sight. In order to pay for the operation, Ah Jong takes on one last high-risk hit. When he is double-crossed by the gang boss who hired him, he finds himself being hunted by a triad hit squad and forms an unlikely alliance with police detective Li Ying (Danny Lee), who has been on Ah Jong’s trail. Despite his criminal profession, Ah Jong is depicted as a man of principles and morals, willing to risk his life to do the right thing and redeem himself. The film is known for its intense action sequences, stylized gunplay and emotional depth; it is a landmark in the heroic bloodshed genre and a defining work in Woo's career.

The remake of “The Killer” is set up to follow a different story than the original. In addition to adding more espionage and stunts, the role of the titular killer that was once played by Chow will now be played by Nathalie Emmanuel. Roven told the Hollywood Reporter that, “By changing the dynamic to a woman, the storyline became quite different.” He went on to say that there’s a lot of original content in the upcoming version of “The Killer” that’s different from the 1989 original.

Emmanuel is best known for her performance as the advisor Missandei in "Game of Thrones" (2011 – 2019). She is joined by a cast of notable actors such as Muslim American actor Saïd Taghmaoui ("Wonder Woman," 2017), as well as Omar Sy ("Lupin," 2021 – ), Diana Silvers ("Booksmart," 2019) and more.

Woo, a renowned filmmaker in Hong Kong and Hollywood, is also preparing to release the holiday action movie “Silent Night” on Dec. 1, 2023.
