TeenBookCon Features Muslim Authors, Keynote Speakers
The event, whose mission is to connect teens with YA authors, will take place in Houston.

The lineup has just been announced for TeenBookCon, a free one-day event that connects teen readers with Young Adult (YA) authors. The event will take place this March and is open to all teens in the Greater Houston Area.

At the event, teens (and grown-ups) will be able to sit in on panels featuring some of the industry’s hottest authors. Several of the authors attending the convention are Muslim authors who have been making waves in the publishing world.

One of the TeenBookCon panelists is Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé, the international bestselling author of the high-octane YA hit “Ace of Spades.” That book follows the only two Black students at an elite private school as they struggle against an anonymous bully with deadly intentions. While Àbíké-Íyímídé only has one solo publication under her belt so far, her highly anticipated sophomore novel “Where Sleeping Girls Lie” will publish just before the festival. Learn more about the books Àbíké-Íyímídé has forthcoming here.

Another featured panelist at the festival is Huda Fahmy, an Egyptian American author and artist known for her webcomic series "Yes, I'm Hot in This." Her fictionalized graphic novels “Huda F Are You?” and “Huda F Cares?” are aimed at teens and draw their emotional beats from their author’s lived experiences. Most recently, “Huda F Cares?” was named a finalist for the National Book Award for Young People's Literature. Fann covered the book in detail here.

Finally, one of TeenBookCon’s two keynote speakers is Tahereh Mafi, a prolific author with an impressive track record as a #1 New York Times bestselling, #1 international bestselling and National Book Award-nominated writer. With over a dozen novels under her belt, Mafi is best known for the immensely popular “Shatter Me” series, which has garnered millions of copies in sales and has been translated into more than thirty languages. We most recently covered Mafi when her book "These Infinite Threads" was shortlisted for the 2023 Goodreads Choice Awards.

According to their website, TeenBookCon is a volunteer committee made up of librarians, teachers and other lovers of YA literature, who come together at monthly planning meetings to make sure that their annual event day is a fantastic opportunity for teens from the greater Houston area and beyond to meet their favorite authors and discover new authors.

TeenBookCon will take place March 23, 2024, at Houston’s Alief Taylor High School. Registration for the free event is open now. Learn more at the link below.
