Sony Pictures Television has acquired the television rights to Iman Zawahry‘s directorial debut movie, “Americanish” (2021). The movie is a light-hearted romantic comedy centering around the lives of two Pakistani American sisters and their cousin, growing up and learning to find love in Jackson Heights, a heavily South Asian area of New York City. The cast includes actors such as Shehnaz Treasury, Ajay Naidu and George Wendt (Cheers), and a soundtrack by DJ Rekha (of “Basement Bhangra” fame).

The movie began as a collaboration between Zawahry and leading actress Aizzah Fatima in early 2014 after meeting at a New York performance of Fatima’s one-woman show, “Dirty Paki Lingerie.” “Americanish” is a result of Zawahry approaching Fatima about adapting her performance into a movie. Fundraising for the movie was mainly conducted within the American Muslim community.

“Americanish” premiered in 2021 at the San Francisco CAAMFest film festival, where it won multiple awards including the Audience Award. Negotiations for Sony Pictures International Productions to acquire global rights to the film began shortly thereafter. The film is now making its way across the film festival circuit with its next screenings scheduled in North Carolina and Texas.
