Short Film “Criteria Kya Hai?” Unveils New Poster
The film follows Sabah, a Pakistani American woman whose life changes when a pair of magical glasses help her reevaluate what it means to find real love and happiness in her world.

The official poster just dropped for “Criteria Kya Hai?” (or “What is the Criteria?” in English), an upcoming short film about a Pakistani American woman whose life changes when a pair of magical glasses shows her the true colors of every man around her. The film was created by Aneesa Khan, a Pakistani American filmmaker and film critic. Khan is serving as director, writer and producer on the project.

The film will feature a talented ensemble cast to bring Khan’s story to life. Sidra Syed stars as Sabah, the film’s protagonist and a recent college grad who finds a pair of magical glasses while trying to survive her sister’s wedding weekend. Saman Hasan Khan has a supporting role as Sabah’s elder sister and the bride-to-be, Imaan. The sisters’ parents are played by two first-time actors, a husband and wife duo known by their first names, Uzma and Rizwan.

Finally, the ensemble of men will be played by Vishal Kal as Kenny, Lakshal Goyal as Suleman, Uneeb Khan as Omer, Maanav Goyal as Jamshed, Niraj Patel as Arslan and Omer Khan as Saayem.

Regarding the film’s message, the filmmakers wrote on Kickstarter that during their journey to create stories about young Pakistani girls, they discovered a great desire to write what they consider to be a tribute to themselves; a tribute to the daily struggle of growing up as dutiful daughters to immigrant parents in America. They attribute this succinctly to the phrase “betiyan ghar ki izzat hoti hain, betey ma baap ka maan,” or “daughters are a household’s dignity and sons are their parents’ pride.” The filmmakers say that this phrase forms the basis of the film. “We illustrate the ways in which this cultural belief also pushes itself into the communities and generations living away from Pakistan, almost more so there, in the diaspora, because of the need to preserve a sense of ‘home”’ away from home,” say the filmmakers. “But, more importantly, how [this belief] has built a generation of young people who have learned to live a double life.”
