Out Now: The Latest Novel From Nobel Prize Winner Abdulrazak Gurnah

Check out “Afterlives” by Abdulrazak Gurnah, the 2021 winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature. This piece of historical fiction discusses the effects of war and colonization on three young people in east Africa with intertwined lives.

Gurnah himself was displaced by war as a teenager, when rebels overtook the government in Zanzibar. He escaped to the U.K., where he started writing as a remedy for homesickness.

According to The New York Times, “Gurnah’s fans say the humanity in his work is one of its strongest points. … [Author Maaza] Mengeste said his novels show ‘it’s possible for people to exist within catastrophes or political systems that are devastating and still maintain their humanity, still fall in love, still create families.’”
