The nomination is notable because the majority of Rakim’s lyrics relate to his identity as a Muslim, which has gone on to influence other contemporary Muslim rappers.
Out Now for Live Theater Fans: “A Nice Indian Boy” Directed by Zi Alikhan
“A Nice Indian Boy” is currently on stage at the Olney Theatre in Olney, Maryland. In this “unapologetically Desi” comedy/romance, Naveen is bringing his boyfriend — a white man raised by Indian foster parents — home to meet his Indian American family for the first time. According to Metro Weekly’s André Hereford, “The play peers through a very specific cultural lens at a universal story of parents finding the serenity to accept their children for who they are, a child’s courage to be his fully queer self whether he’s accepted or not, and the wisdom of trying to bridge the two.”
The play is directed by Zi Alikhan, a queer, first-generation South Asian American theater director and a Theatre Communications Group Rising Leader of Color in 2021.
“A Nice Indian Boy” will be playing until April 16, 2023.
