One Family’s Biography Explored in New Book “Bird on a Wire”
Mary Lahaj an award-winning proponent of interfaith dialogue, whose family has been practicing Islam in America for more than 120 years.

“Bird on a Wire” is a new biography by Mary Lahaj that explores the author’s rich family history.

The book is about the journey that individuals go on to take the faith they inherited from their parents and make it their own. To provide excitement and extra insight, Lahaj begins her family epic in Lebanon at the turn of the 20th century and incorporates the unique perspectives of three generations on how one becomes an “American.” As each generation attempts to integrate their culture into the majority culture (in this case, Lahaj says, it is largely Christian America), the reader becomes privy to the generations’ dreams and decisions about how much they assimilate to that majority culture and how much they should preserve as a matter of self-identity.

Lahaj says that her “rather colorful life” combines her personal quest to become a cheerleader with her family’s dream of building the first mosque in New England in 1964.

“I chose the title ‘Bird on a Wire’ based on an observation made by my maternal grandfather, Mohamed Omar Awaad,” Lahaj wrote on her website. “He once described an assembly of birds sitting on a telephone wire as “birds lining up for prayer.” I chose the title to honor him because he taught me how to pray and because I am one of God’s creatures who loves to sing and worship.”

“Bird on a Wire” is currently available as an e-book on Amazon, both for purchase and also included in the service Kindle Unlimited. The paperback version of “Bird on a Wire” will be released tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 17, in honor of Lahaj’s mother’s birthday.
