Omar Sy’s Gentleman Thief Returns in “Lupin” Part 3
Omar Sy has been praised for his effortless charm as Assane Diop — no wonder "Lupin" is Netflix's third most popular non-English language series of all time.

Netflix’s hit French thriller series “Lupin” (2021 – ) just released its third part. The show is based on the fictional gentleman thief and master of disguise Arsène Lupin, who was created by Maurice Leblanc in the early 1900s. Unlike the books, however, the Netflix adaptation of "Lupin" is set in modern times. The show follows the story of Assane Diop (Omar Sy), a professional thief seeking revenge on the wealthy and powerful Pellegrini family who framed his father for a diamond theft. Assane's journey is inspired by a book he reads about Arsène Lupin, which was gifted to him by his late father.

“The character had to be a Frenchman from today,” Sy told Rolling Stone in an April 2021 article about the decision to recontextualize Lupin for the modern era. “That’s why we have a Black guy coming from African descent living in the projects. It’s a new face of France. All of that comes with new topics: How do people see this guy? How do you live in a country when you’re a guy like that? How do you earn money?”

“Lupin” premiered on Netflix on Jan. 8, 2021, and with its second part releasing just a few months later on June 11, 2021, fans have been waiting quite some time for a part three. Audience response to the show has been overwhelming positive — Netflix reported that “Lupin” was watched by 70 million households in the first month of its release, making it the most-watched non-English show on Netflix at the time, as well the second most successful debut for a Netflix original show after "Bridgerton" (2020 – ). “Lupin” Part 1 remains Netflix’s third most popular non-English language series of all time, behind only "Squid Game" (2021 – ) and “Money Heist” (2017 – 2021). “Lupin” has gone on to earn nominations for Golden Globe and Critics’ Choice Awards, both for best series and best performance for Sy.

The synopsis for part three of “Lupin” is as follows:

Now in hiding, Assane must learn to live far from his wife and son. With the suffering they endure because of him, Assane can't stand it any longer and decides to return to Paris to make them a crazy proposal: leave France and start a new life elsewhere. But the ghosts of the past are never far away, and an unexpected return will turn his plans upside down.

“Lupin” stars French Muslim actor Omar Sy as the charming and daring gentleman thief Assane Diop. Also in the cast are Ludivine Sagnier as Assane’s estranged wife Claire, debut actor Etan Simon as Assane and Claire’s son Raoul, Antoine Gouy as Assane’s best friend and occasional criminal partner, Vincent Londez as the no-nonsense Capitaine Romain Laugier following Assane’s trail, Shirine Boutella as Laugier’s lieutenant detective Sofia Belkacem, and Soufiane Guerrab as Youssef Guédira, a fellow Lupin enthusiast who combines his book expertise and detective skills to track Assane’s next steps.

"Lupin Part 3" premiered on Oct. 5, 2023. You can catch the full series only on Netflix.
