NFL Quarterback Colin Kaepernick Writes Empowering Children’s Book “We Are Free, You & Me” With Wife Nessa Diab
While Kaepernick has published several books for children previously, this is his first time publishing jointly with his wife.

Colin Kaepernick, a renowned activist, NFL Super Bowl quarterback and New York Times bestselling author, is teaming up with his wife, the activist and nationally syndicated radio host Nessa Diab, and children’s publishing company Scholastic to publish the upcoming picture book “We Are Free, You & Me.” The book is illustrated by Gladys Jose

“We Are Free, You & Me” promises to be a lyrical affirmation of what freedom truly means. The book celebrates the principles of Kaepernick and Diab’s Know Your Rights Camp, an organization that advances the liberation and well-being of Black and Brown communities and elevates the next generation of change leaders, inspiring thousands of young people. Kaepernick and Diab will donate 100 percent of their proceeds from the book to Know Your Rights Camp.

“We’re proud to collaborate with Colin and Nessa on their picture book debut,” Andrea Davis Pinkney, Vice President and Executive Editor at Scholastic, said in a statement. “Their triumphant anthem for all children celebrates the freedom that lives in everyone. This book’s read-aloud power will have kids rejoicing in their own brilliance and freedom.”

“As parents, this project has been especially meaningful to us,” said Kaepernick and Diab. “The messages contained in ‘We Are Free, You & Me’ represent what we aspire to affirm in our own child. The book celebrates a fictional family enjoying a day together in their loving community. We hope this book inspires young people to live in the light of their own strength, truth and self-worth as they embark on their journey through life.”

Kaepernick and Jose also spoke highly of Jose’s illustrations, saying that she has beautifully rendered the vibrancy that shines in the universal joy and promise that’s illuminated in the experiences of community.

The book is described as follows on the publisher’s website:

Activists Colin Kaepernick and Nessa Diab present a poetic anthem to your brilliance, your beauty, your very existence.
