MIT and MIPSTERZ To Host Multisensory Celebration of Muslim Creative Voices, “Cultural Deferences”

Cultural Deferences brings together thinkers, creatives and artists for a thought-provoking of speech, music and dramatic performance. The event will feature lightning talks by a variety of local innovators speaking to their areas of expertise.

Cultural Deferences promises to be an engaging fusion of culture, performance and community.

This weekend, the MIT Muslim Students Association is partnering with MIPSTERZ to host Cultural Deferences, a multisensory event celebrating Muslim creative voices. The showcase brings together thinkers, creatives and artists for a thought-provoking and soul-enriching evening of speech, music and dramatic performance. The event will be hosted by actor and podcaster Najah Imani Muhammad.

The event will feature lightning talks by a variety of local innovators speaking to their areas of expertise. The speakers include:

During the showcase, the lightning talks will be scored live by Shahjehan Khan on instrumentals. The event will also feature the Senegalese drum ensemble Rambax MIT, which is led by the master percussionist Lamine Touré. Additional performances will come from Ghulam Woolman and Sarrah Shahawy

The event is jointly presented by the MIT Muslim Students Association and the MIT Mobin student group, as well as the Muslim arts and culture collective MIPSTERZ. MIPSTERZ is known for hosting similar spotlight series, which have been described as a combination of a TED Talk and a house party.

Cultural Deferences takes place Sunday, Oct. 15 at 6:00 p.m. It is free and open to all.
