London Eid al-Fitr Concert Showcases Muslim Composers

Famed harpist Olivia Jageurs streamed a performance to celebrate Eid al-Fitr this year, featuring compositions by jazz pianist Ahmad Jamal (who passed away in April 2023) and contemporary classical composer Dana Al Fardan. Jaguars, who is not Muslim, drew mainly on her experiences touring the Middle East, including Egypt and Qatar, to inform her concert. The show incorporated styles such as Lebanese dabke and Indonesian pop.

Jageurs is known for studying and advancing the field of harp playing. This includes showcasing the intersections of the instrument with the Muslim world; the harp is at least as old as the Ottoman empire.
