Lena Khan Signs on to Direct Hasan Minhaj’s “Best of the Best”

Lena Khan (“Flora and Ulysses”) has been tapped to direct “Best of the Best,” a comedy feature film by Hasan Minhaj inspired by college campus Bollywood dance competitions. The Canadian-born, California-raised Khan is best known for her work on Disney+’s “Flora and Ulysses,” a story about a girl and a magical squirrel. She has been known for comedy since her debut film, “The Tiger Hunter” (2017) starring Dani Pudi  and was recently attached to direct a new adaption of the children’s book, “The Cricket in Times Square.” She was also nominated for an Oscar this year for her work on the Documentary Short “Stranger at the Gate.”

“Best of the Best” first came to light in 2021 under the name “For The Culture,” when Amazon Studios won an eight studio bidding war to secure rights to what was then described as a “a vibrant, joyful celebration of Indian-American culture that bridges the gap between Western audiences and those who grew up watching Bollywood films.”

The writing team consists of Minhaj and co-writer Prashanth Venkataramanujam, who worked together on the acclaimed Netflix show “Patriot Act With Hasan Minhaj.” In addition to writing duties, Minhaj will also play a role in the film.
