Kumail Nanjiani Joins “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” Sequel

Comedian and actor Kumail Nanjiani has joined the cast of the live-action sequel to “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” (2021), the most recent installment in the Ghostbusters franchise. Nanjiani is one of several new additions to the cast, which includes Patton Oswalt, James Acaster and Emily Alyn Lind. “Afterlife” originally starred Paul Rudd and Carrie Coon, who will return to the series.

The film’s setting will be the iconic New York City firehouse from the original series. Gil Kenan is directing, and Jason Reitman, who directed “Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” will be writer and producer alongside Kenan and Jason Blumenfeld.

Nanjiani, after having a turn in the Marvel franchise as Kingo in “Eternals,” expressed his excitement at joining another franchise in an interview with PopCulture.com, citing the original “Ghostbusters” as his “first favorite movie.”

“I watched it over and over and over,” Nanjiani said. “Truly, I remember my cousin telling me about the movie before I’d seen it and I was like, ‘Wait, it’s horror and it’s comedy in the same movie?’ I couldn’t believe it. It felt like it was made for me. … [Joining the franchise is] a dream I wouldn’t even dare to dream. … It was even too big to dream.”

Filming is currently underway, with a December 20 announced release date.
