Now that the Writers Guild of America strike has ended, Hollywood studios are looking at which projects they’ll prioritize once the SAG-AFTRA strike has also reached a conclusion. One of the major productions expected to resume is “Gladiator 2” (2024) starring May Calamawy.

It was announced that Calamawy had joined the cast back in May of this year. While Fann’s readers may know Calamawy best as Ramy’s outspoken younger sister Dena Hassan in “Ramy” (2019 - ), her big break came when she starred as Layla El-Faouly in Marvel’s "Moon Knight" (2022). That action adventure experience under Calamawy’s belt will likely better prepare her for her upcoming role in “Gladiator 2.”

Not much is known about the plot of “Gladiator 2” yet. The film serves as a sequel to Ridley Scott’s “Gladiator” (2000), a historical epic film featuring Russell Crowe as Maximus, a Roman general turned gladiator seeking revenge against the corrupt Emperor Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix). The film won multiple Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Crowe. “Gladiator 2” will follow Lucius, the son of Maximus's love interest Lucilla (and nephew of the antagonistic Commodus), after Maximus's death in the first film.

Paul Mescal is set to lead the film as Lucius. Also joining Calamawy and Mescal in the cast are Denzel Washington, Pedro Pascal and Joseph Quinn, as well as Derek Jacobi and Connie Nielsen, who are reprising their roles from the original film.

Variety reports that “Gladiator 2” was more than halfway done filming when its actors went on strike in July, which suggests that director Ridley Scott and the rest of the cast and crew won't have as much to film when they return to the set after the strike ends.

The end of the writers' strike is good news, but for a movie like “Gladiator 2,” not much movement is expected until the end of the actors' strike. While SAG-AFTRA will soon meet with AMPTP to negotiate, an instant deal shouldn’t be expected. Both sides need to ensure a fair agreement, which might take weeks.

Since AMPTP made a favorable deal with writers, they're likely to do the same with actors to resume projects quickly. Industry insiders speculate the actors' strike will end by October, which could put production on track to restart by December of this year or early 2024 at the latest.

“Gladiator 2” is currently planned to release on Nov. 22, 2024.
