Hena Khan Announces Middle Grade Anthology “The Door Is Open”
"The Door Is Open" is expected to contain laugh out loud humor, touching moments, inspiration and more.

Little, Brown Books for Young Readers has announced a new anthology celebrating the diversity of South Asian American experiences in a local community center. “The Door Is Open,” which has been edited by the prolific children’s author Hena Khan, is set to publish in April of next year.

The description of the book is as follows from the publisher’s website:

Discover stories of fear, triumph and spectacular celebration in the fictional town of Maple Grove, New Jersey, where the local kids gather at the community center to discover new crushes, fight against ignorance and even save a life. Cheer for Chaya as she wins chess tournaments (unlike Andrew, she knows stupid sugary soda won't make you better at chess), and follow as Jeevan learns how to cook traditional food (it turns out he can cook sabji — he just can't eat it).
These stories, edited by bestselling and award-winning Pakistani American author Hena Khan, are filled with humor, warmth and possibility. They showcase a diverse array of talented authors with heritage from the Indian subcontinent — including beloved favorites and rising stars — who each highlight the beauty and necessity of a community center that everyone calls home.

“The Door Is Open” features 11 interconnected stories from a variety of own voices authors, including Khan herself. The authors featured in “The Door Is Open” are Sayantani DasGupta, Reem Faruqi, Naheed Hasnat, Veera Hiranandani, Supriya Kelkar, Rajani LaRocca, Maulik Pancholy, Mitali Perkins, Aisha Saeed and Simran Jeet Singh.

The book’s cover was illustrated by Chaaya Prabhat. In addition to the 11 stories, “The Door Is Open” will feature illustrations throughout, though it is unclear at this time if they were provided by Prabhat.

Both Khan and Saeed have been featured in Fann’s “Fall Into Reading” series, a weekly spotlight on Muslim authors who are changing the game in children’s literature. Even more interviews with Muslim children’s authors are upcoming in the series.

“The Door Is Open” will publish on April 23, 2024. Support the authors by preordering your copy today.
