The latest hints about the album were a series of photos uploaded in December 2023.

In 2023, SZA dominated the music scene with her second album, “SOS,” which topped the Billboard 200 for 10 non-consecutive weeks and featured the chart-topping single “Kill Bill.” This has earned SZA multiple Grammy nominations, including Album of the Year, and Song and Record of the Year for "Kill Bill." The 34-year-old artist is now actively working on her next project, “Lana,” named after her real name, Solána Rowe. Despite not revealing many details, SZA has been teasing the album both as a deluxe edition of “SOS” and as a fully separate release.

What kind of album is “Lana" and how is it related to "SOS?"

It seems that “Lana” began its life as a deluxe edition of “SOS” but may have developed into a project of its own. While deluxe editions are common for successful albums, SZA's descriptions of "Lana" have varied over the last several months. Details such as the release date, tracklist and the number of songs remain unconfirmed, with the most information provided in interviews with Variety in August and November 2023.

Back in August 2023, SZA told Variety that, “It’s outtakes [from ‘SOS’] and new stuff, too — I added a couple of songs. It’s like a whole new project. It’s called ‘Lana’ — [which is] my name, but it’s [also] the first tattoo that I ever got when I was 13. It was 10 bucks a letter and I only had 40, so that became my nickname for no reason. ‘Lana’ is really just the B-side of ‘SOS.’”

As of Sept. 8, SZA was referred to “Lana” as both “the deluxe” side of  “SOS” but also “a whole ‘nother album” while performing a free concert at the Brooklyn Navy Yard.

During a second interview with Variety in November 2023, SZA talked more expansively about the album. “I never get these things done until like the day before the deadline,” SZA said in the interview. “It became more than I thought. It was gonna be something really soft because I had made all my screaming points [on ‘SOS’], and I just wanted to glide and not think [too much], and just get out of my own head … Now it’s definitely turning it into its own album. I guess I could drop another album randomly, because no one’s actually expecting that from me right now.”

When will “Lana” be released?

During SZA’s concert at the Brooklyn Navy Yard in Sept. 2023, she told fans that the album would be out “this fall.” But fall of 2023 has now passed, and the album is arriving later than SZA initially anticipated. SZA pointed to this in her November 2023 Variety interview, saying that the album became “more than [she] thought.”

While no official release date has been confirmed, it can also be assumed that the anticipated fall 2023 launch means SZA and her team are aiming to put the album out sooner than not. It seems possible that “Lana” will be released in 2024.

What kind of songs will be on “Lana?”

At the September 2023 Brooklyn Navy Yard concert, SZA performed three unreleased songs that have been dubbed by fans “Boy From South Detroit,” “Saturn” and “DTM;” the latter has also been referred to as “Diamond Boy,” and SZA played it as a work in progress during her Rolling Stone interview in October 2023. While these songs haven’t been confirmed for “Lana,” they seem likely inclusions.

When Variety asked if the song “Joni” — SZA’s tribute to Joni Mitchell that has was leaked several years ago — would be on the album, she confirmed that it is. “‘Joni’ is on it. Well, they leaked it, so I wasn’t [going to] put it on there. I guess I should still … but they leaked it already. They ruined it. [Fans] already have it.”
