"Houdini" is being praised for its driving beat, throbbing bass hook and infectious ‘80s synths.

Dua Lipa has released new music for the first time in years with her infectious new single “Houdini.” Following the success of her 2020 album “Future Nostalgia,” Lipa has kept busy with a remix album, a global tour, a variety of collaborations, and dipping a toe into the world of acting. But despite earning two Grammy nods for her work on “Barbie” (2023), it's been almost three years since Lipa’s last album.

“Houdini,” the lead single from Lipa’s upcoming third album, has a lively beat and '80s synth vibes. The song simultaneously expands on the disco sound Lipa tapped into on “Future Nostalgia” while adding more depth. The still untitled album, which is still in progress, promises a new sonic experience for Lipa with a "1970s-era psychedelic" vibe, though the new album will remain within the pop genre. While there's no official release date, the album is expected early next year.

The single was co-produced by Danny L. Harle and Tame Impala's Kevin Parker, who also played various instruments on the track. Co-written by Caroline Ailin and Tobias Jesso Jr., the song marks the beginning of a new chapter for Lipa.

“This track represents the most light and freeing parts of my singledom,” Lipa said in a press release announcing the single. “‘Houdini’ is very tongue-in-cheek, exploring the idea of whether someone is really worth my while or if I’ll ghost them in the end. You never know where something may take you — that’s the beauty of being open to whatever life throws your way. I’m looking forward to sharing that feeling of defiant bliss with my fans.”

The accompanying music video for “Houdini” was directed by Manu Cossu and shot by André Chemetoff.

Since releasing “Future Nostalgia” and its full-length remix companion, Lipa has featured in the spy thriller  “Argylle” (2024) and Greta Gerwig’s blockbuster “Barbie.” She also recently bought back the rights to her publishing catalog.

Earlier this year in a profile for The New York Times’ T Magazine, Lipa suggested that she had been working with Parker on her as-of-yet untitled album.

Lipa's upcoming third studio album is set to arrive in 2024.
