Dua Lipa Cuts Words and Hearts in New Trailer for Spy Thriller “Argylle”
The film marks Lipa's second non–music video acting credit, following her performance as Mermaid Barbie in Greta Gerwig's box office hit "Barbie" (2023) earlier this year.

Dua Lipa stars in “Argylle” (2024), an upcoming action film from genre-bending filmmaker Matthew Vaughn. At first glance, “Argylle” appears to be a straightforward spy thriller, featuring Lipa’s femme fatale character dancing with — and later attempting to assassinate — the titular secret agent Argylle (Henry Cavill). But shortly after Lipa’s character is pulled out of a motorcycle chase by John Cena, it’s revealed that the sequence is actually a scene from a best-selling novel by introverted author Elly Conway (Bryce Dallas Howard). The film follows Elly who, while on vacation with her cat to treat her writer’s block, ends up entangled in an espionage mystery that is eerily similar to those she has been penning. With the help of a real spy (Sam Rockwell), Elly realizes she is a target for a rogue espionage group after her novels have predicted real spy missions with too much accuracy.

In addition to her role in the film, Lipa will provide original music for the film’s title track and score.

When Vanity Fair asked Vaughn about his inspiration for the upcoming film, he said, “I’m guilty of handsome spies with great haircuts and wonderfully cut suits. In reality, if you’re a spy, it’s a pretty dumb thing to do. You’re going to be the guy that gets noticed in the room.” Vaughn is perhaps best known for his work writing and directing the “Kingsman” series of films, an action-comedy romp featuring spies who are as clever as they are dashing. “A good spy should be the person you least expect the spy to be. And that’s what this movie is all about. It’s like Roger Moore said about James Bond—what sort of spy walks into a room and everyone knows his name and what he likes to drink? It’s ridiculous. We’re having fun destroying these tropes.”

The star-studded cast also includes Bryan Cranston, Ariana DeBose, Catherine O’Hara and Samuel L. Jackson. It is expected to be the first in a franchise.

“Argylle” is an Apple Original Films picture, in partnership with Universal Pictures. It comes out in theaters Feb. 2, 2024 and will stream on Apple TV+ at a later date.

The synopsis from the film's website:

The greater the spy, the bigger the lie. From the twisted mind of Matthew Vaughn (Kingsman franchise, Kick-Ass) comes "Argylle," a razor-witted, reality-bending, globe-encircling spy thriller. Bryce Dallas Howard ("Jurassic World" franchise) is Elly Conway, the reclusive author of a series of best-selling espionage novels, whose idea of bliss is a night at home with her computer and her cat, Alfie. But when the plots of Elly’s fictional books — which center on secret agent Argylle and his mission to unravel a global spy syndicate — begin to mirror the covert actions of a real-life spy organization, quiet evenings at home become a thing of the past. Accompanied by Aiden (Oscar winner Sam Rockwell), a cat-allergic spy, Elly (carrying Alfie in her backpack) races across the world to stay one step ahead of the killers as the line between Elly’s fictional world and her real one begins to blur. The top-flight ensemble cast features Henry Cavill ("The Witcher"), John Cena ("Fast X"), Oscar winner Ariana DeBose ("West Side Story"), Grammy winning pop superstar Dua Lipa ("Barbie"), Emmy winner and Oscar nominee Bryan Cranston ("Breaking Bad"), Emmy winner and comedy icon Catherine O’Hara ("Schitt’s Creek"), Sofia Boutella ("Kingsman: The Secret Service") and the legendary Samuel L. Jackson. Alfie is played by Chip, the real-life cat of supermodel Claudia Vaughn (née Schiffer). "Argylle" is directed and produced by Matthew Vaughn, from a screenplay by Jason Fuchs ("Wonder Woman"). The film is produced by Matthew Vaughn, Adam Bohling ("Kingsman" franchise), Jason Fuchs and David Reid ("Kingsman" franchise). The executive producers are Adam Fishbach, Zygi Kamasa, Carlos Peres and Claudia Vaughn. Apple Original Films presents, in association with MARV, a Cloudy production. "Argylle" is distributed by Universal Pictures.
