Coming Soon: YA Novel “The Next New Syrian Girl"
Ream Shukairy’s debut novel, “The Next New Syrian Girl,” arrives this March. A Syrian American writer raised in California but spending summers in Syria, Shukairy says, “there isn’t a stereotype she won’t try her hardest to defy.”
The story is about an unlikely friendship between two Syrian teenagers, one a rebellious, privileged girl raised with traditional American customs, the other a recent refugee riddled with fear and insecurities. One reader remarked that it’s “a poignant story of two girls who are so different yet the same. Shukairy lays out both sides of a diaspora and a refugee and the longing both feel towards a home that has lost too much. As a Syrian, I was seen.”
