Abubakr Ali Stars in “Toros,” off-Broadway Play

“Toros,” a new off-Broadway play, based in Madrid, will open on August 1, and star Abubakr Ali will join the cast, along with b, and Tony winner Frank Wood. They join Juan Castano in Danny Tejera’s play following three late 20-somethings as they smoke and drink together in a garage in Madrid, discussing their beliefs.

Gaye Taylor Upchurch is heading the production, which will begin previews at the McGinn/Cazale Theater on July 18, with an opening night slated for August 1. “Toros” was previously presented as a part of the Judith Champion New Voices Reading Series in 2022, a series of works by new voices, presented at Second Stage theater. 

Abubakr Ali has previously starred in “Anything’s Possible” (2022), a romantic comedy, starring Eva Reign and Ali. He has also starred in the series “Katy Keene” (2020), and “Power Book II: Ghost” (2020-). Ali was the first Arab Muslim actor cast to lead a comic book adaptation with “Grendel,” but the series was axed from Netflix’s release slate in 2022 before it was released.
